About Us

Who Are We?

Organized as a congregation on January 12, 1868 with an initial membership of just ten people, Messiah Lutheran Church has been called by God in Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, to bear witness to God’s creative, redeeming, and sanctifying activity in the world for more than 150 years. By God’s grace, we have grown and flourished, nurturing our members through Word and Sacrament and responding to God’s love by meeting human needs, caring for the sick and the aged, advocating dignity and justice for all people, and working for peace and reconciliation.

Our worship life is centered on the proclamation of the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ. Holy Communion is celebrated each Sunday according to the historic pattern of the Church. Outstanding musicians and enthusiastic volunteer choirs provide dedicated leadership. Adults and youth alike serve as readers, communion servers, and ministers of hospitality.

What do we do?

Over the past several years, we have become involved in many exciting ministries to the community.  We offer non-perishable food to those in need. We are proud to be a member congregation of Family Promise of Lycoming County, a multi-congregation effort assisting homeless families in securing permanent, affordable housing.

Besides these missions, we are blessed to be able to serve the community by operating a preschool where children 3-5 years of age can come to learn social skills and get a head start on academics in a loving, Christian atmosphere. And each summer, we reach out to the surrounding community by offering a week of Vacation Bible School to children age 4-12; our youth are always eager to assist the adult leaders in this venture. In addition to these important ministries we offer a church women’s group (Women of the ELCA), as well as many dedicated volunteers who keep things running.

Who’s welcome?

Everyone! This is Christ’s church and it is open to all. There is a place for you here. It is our great joy to partner with community groups like the Boy Scouts, Sit Happens,  South Williamsport Youth Football and Cheer, and Little League Baseball, to help make South Williamsport a better place to live. Check out the calendar for more opportunities. May the grace and peace of Christ be ever with you!
